Over the last 4 days, I've been tracking the usage of my personal favorite social media app, TikTok. The only platform I used TikTok on was my phone. Starting Sunday, February 19th, I've spent 703 minutes, or around 11 hours and 45 minutes. The most I used TikTok was today actually, with a total of 4 hours and 8 minutes and the lowest was Sunday with 2 hours. I only use TikTok to view content, and I don't post myself outside of the occasional comment.
I'd like to look at the times of day I used TikTok the most to see if there were any patterns. Based on the charts of my usage (I'll post screenshots at the bottom of this post), virtually all of my usage occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. This wasn't very surprising because I typically work around 8 a.m. Monday through Wednesday so it makes sense that I would be up and using my phone. It was surprising to see how much my usage declined around 10 p.m. because I tend to stay up quite late so I figured it would be higher. The only other notable trend was that there was usually a spike in activity between 12 and ~2 p.m.
Overall, I thought this little experiment was interesting. You never really quantify the actual amount of time you spend scrolling on social media, so seeing it laid out on a chart was eye-opening. After learning that I spent almost 12 hours on one app over only four days, I admit I was a little embarrassed. I should be more aware of how I spend my time in the future and make sure that I spend it a bit more wisely.
