Welcome to my blog!

Name

My name is Shay Dunphy and thats the name I go by, welcome to my blog :).

Where are you from and where are you at now

I was born in Palm Harbor, Florida and have lived there my whole life. I've moved a couple times but stayed in the same area.

Major

I am a Health Science major with a concentration. I plan on taking a 2-year certificate program for radiography at SPC once I graduate from USF.

A Few Fun Facts

  • I've never broken a bone, or been to a hospital for anything
  • I strongly, strongly dislike chocolate
  • I also strongly, strongly dislike coffee
(I promise I'm not a negative person, I just can't think of anything interesting about myself)

Professional Experience

I've only worked as a bagger at Publix. I've been doing it for about 4 years now.

What's your favorite social media platform and why?

I'd say my favorite social media is probably TikTok. I don't post anything on any platfroms but TikTok suplies me with my daily dose of silly videos.

Is this your first time creating a blog?

This is the first blog I've ever made, seems like it will be interesting to work on throughout the semester.

What is your experience with using (reading) blogs?

I can't really recall any personal experience with blogs, I'm sure I've come across one while looking for something very specific online or something, but I haven't gone out of my way to read a specific blog.

What do you like or dislike about using blogs?

I'm not really sure yet, guess we'll have to see.

Comments

Assignment #3

Over the last 4 days, I've been tracking the usage of my personal favorite social media app, TikTok. The only platform I used TikTok on was my phone. Starting Sunday, February 19th, I've spent 703 minutes, or around 11 hours and 45 minutes. The most I used TikTok was today actually, with a total of 4 hours and 8 minutes and the lowest was Sunday with 2 hours. I only use TikTok to view content, and I don't post myself outside of the occasional comment. I'd like to look at the times of day I used TikTok the most to see if there were any patterns. Based on the charts of my usage (I'll post screenshots at the bottom of this post), virtually all of my usage occurred between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. This wasn't very surprising because I typically work around 8 a.m. Monday through Wednesday so it makes sense that I would be up and using my phone. It was surprising to see how much my usage declined around 10 p.m. because I tend to stay up quite late so I figured it would be ...

Journal Entry 2

This week I read "We Are Data" by John Cheney-Lippold which discusses how our online presence is determined from a more corporate view and how that affects us online. I'd like to begin with my thoughts on this reading, which there are a lot of. The main idea of this book is to explain that all of the data from every action we do when connected to the internet in some form determines who we are, even if it's incorrect or we didn't provide it. Lisa Gitelman and Virginia Jackson summarize it well when they said "data doesn't speak but is spoken for" (Cheney-Lippold, preface xiii) which basically means that the data we leave when using the internet is taken by say Google or an advertiser, and is then categorized into the person that they think we are. For example, I went to google.com/ads/preferences and was able to see the person Google thinks I am. Obviously, since I have a google account, they would have access to things like my age and gender, but t...
