I would define media as any form of content meant to be consumed either for entertainment or information whether that be images, videos, text, messages, or anything in between. Social networking is the way in which all of us are connected together through our relationships and acquaintances, you can view it as a web in which everyone you know is connected in some way. Social media like TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook combine these to connect with each other and content in new ways. I personally use TikTok, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. I use TikTok and Twitter specifically for entertainment. I use Snapchat and Instagram to connect with people I'm close to, but I don't post on any sites. I rarely use anything besides Snapchat a few times a day and TikTok daily whenever I have nothing else to do. My use of social media doesn't affect how I view myself.  This week I read "We Are Data" by John Cheney-Lippold which discusses how our online presence is determined from a more corporate view and how that affects us online. I'd like to begin with my thoughts on this reading, which there are a lot of. The main idea of this book is to explain that all of the data from every action we do when connected to the internet in some form determines who we are, even if it's incorrect or we didn't provide it. Lisa Gitelman and Virginia Jackson summarize it well when they said "data doesn't speak but is spoken for" (Cheney-Lippold, preface xiii) which basically means that the data we leave when using the internet is taken by say Google or an advertiser, and is then categorized into the person that they think we are. For example, I went to google.com/ads/preferences and was able to see the person Google thinks I am. I personally don't post on social media, so I don't have much in the way of do's and don'ts but I do have a couple. For do's, try to keep things friendly, and be kind even if you don't have a reason to, it's usually not worth starting an argument even if someone gives you a reason.  I can't think of any more do's so we'll move on to don'ts which are a little easier, don't post personal information, don't post anything you wouldn't want your boss seeing (at least on your public accounts), and don't believe everything you see. I've seen many things where someone's video with false information blows up and everyone that sees it takes their word as fact and spreads it to others.
